Go nearly as far south as one can go in South America and you’ll find yourself in one of the world’s most alluring landscapes. Patagonia, an area covering more than a third of Argentina and Chile, is a huge natural preserve that tempts those seeking wildlife, magnificent scenery, and adventure.

Our tour of Patagonia will concentrate on the magnificent landscapes, as well as the region’s wildlife, in two of the most incredible national parks you’ll ever visit: Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina and Cerro Torre National Park in Chile.

The lakes and mountains in this region are considered among the most beautiful on the planet. Massive glaciers calve blue icebergs into lakes, the color so intense that it’s often dismissed as unreal to those viewing photographs of them. Jagged mountains reflecting in pristine lakes offer some of the most stunning mountain landscapes you’ll find anywhere, while guanacos stand sentinel against snowy peaks and condors soar overhead.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the autumn color of the beech forests offers a brilliant contrast to those rugged peaks and blue lakes.

Though the trip officially begins on April 12 with your arrival in El Calafate and transferring to El Chalten, we suggest an arrival in Buenos Aires on April 10. We plan on staying at the CasaSur Recoleta hotel. The next day will be spent exploring the city and getting acclimated. On the morning of the 12th we'll fly to El Calafate to officially begin the tour. Upon signing up you'll be sent further details.

As this is a photo tour rather than a workshop, we may or may not have any formal classroom teaching. This doesn't mean we won't try to get together to share images and answer questions. It will be a matter of available time and meeting space.

Our Guide

Based in Punta Arenas, Chile (not somewhere a long distant from Patagonia) the guides we are teaming with are passionate about what they do, intimately knowledgeable about the area, and expert naturalists. They know photography, they understand light and they'll get us to right locations at the right times.

They'll also be providing comfortable, spacious transportation. We won't be jammed tightly into a van like sardines as other tours do.

The Tour:

Day 1 · Arrival at El Calafate airport - Transfer to El Chalten

Overnight at El Chalten, Argentina. (Lunch included)

Mount Fitz Roy, Los Glaciares, Argentina

Day 2 · Sunrise shooting for Mt Fitzroy and full day in Los Glaciares NP.

Day 3 · Lago del Desierto - El Chalten surroundings
The stunning Lago del Desierto (Lake of the Desert) offers us another view of Fitzroy.
We will drive from El Chalten along the Rio de las Vueltas to Lago del Desierto. Time permitting, we may stop along the way for sunrise shooting of Fitzroy reflected in the river’s waters.

Day 5 · Los Glaciares NP: Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier sweeps down from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, terminating in the waters of Lago Argentino. We'll have ample opportunity to photograph the blue glacial ice from multiple vantage points: by boat, along the south wall of the Glacier, and from a network of footbridges and platforms built into the facing hillside. With a little luck we may even see it calve into the pristine waters of the lake.

Overnight at El Calafate, Argentina (Breakfast, lunch)

Day 6 · Transfer to Torres del Paine NP

Torres del Paine, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is known for its lakes, glaciers, waterfalls and granite towers, and has been referred to as the “8th Wonder of the World”.

Day 9 · Puma searching at Estancia Laguna Amarga

Today we will be aided by a professional puma tracker in hopes of finding and photographing the Patagonian Puma (Puma concolor patagonia) The ample population of Guanacos along with the protection afforded the Puma means that sightings are not unusual. With luck we will have the chance to photograph this largest of all pumas in the Americas.

Grey Glacier, Torres del Paine, Chile

Day 10 · Sunrise shooting for the Horns - Boat trip to Grey Glacier

Trip Insurance

Unfortunately, I am unable to make last minute refunds or provide credit to future workshops due to these last minute cancellations. I therefore highly recommend travel insurance.
